Madison Metropolitan School District, Marquette Elementary

Outcome

Emily developed and designed an after-school gardening club at the request and support of school community parents. Students worked toward a common goal of reviving their school garden through garden care, maintenance, and education. Garden club activities included planning for the garden space, sourcing and painting garden signage, weeding and preparing garden beds, growing and planting seedlings, sourcing seedlings from the community, watering, and more. Students ate fresh food from the garden, and Emily also integrated a cultural cooking and snack activity to each club session. Emily facilitated stakeholder logistics meetings, worked with stakeholders to integrate the club into the school, worked with community organizations and grocers for food donations for the cooking component, and organized all operational aspects of the club. Emily was able to train parent volunteers in club organization, facilitation, management, and logistics, with the club continuing to be led by parents into the future.
